When you’re browsing Pocket Spring Memory Foam Mattresses, you’ll probably come across a lot of big numbers. Don’t worry, these 3-figure sums aren’t the price tag … it’s the Pocket Spring Count! But what’s the best number of pocket springs in a mattress?
From 1000 to 3000 - we decode the language of pocket springs to help you achieve a perfect night’s sleep.
What is a Pocket Spring Mattress?
A pocket spring mattress features individual springs, each encased in its own fabric pocket. Individual pocket springs can move independently of one another, allowing for a more personalised sleep experience that responds to your body movement throughout the night.
This type of mattress is superior to standard spring or coil mattresses which don’t offer as much support and are less long-lasting.
Types of Pocket Spring Mattress
A memory foam pocket sprung mattress combines individual springs with a layer of cushioning memory foam for enhanced comfort and support. This provides the ultimate sleep surface for all types of sleepers and is perfect for couples looking for a compromise between the bounce of springs and softness of foam.
Benefits of Pocket Sprung Mattresses
Pocket sprung mattresses offer many benefits;
- Minimises movement disturbance if you share a bed
- Highly supportive sleep surface
- Breathable bed material
- Responds to individual movement
Understanding Pocket Spring Count
If you’re in the market for a new pocket spring mattress, you will have come across mattresses with varying spring counts.
Typically, pocket spring mattresses are available in the following spring counts;
- 1000 springs
- 1500 springs
- 2000 springs
- 3000 springs
The pocket spring count of a mattress states how many pocket springs can be found in the King Size version of that mattress design.
For example, let’s take our Outlast Superior 1500 Pocket Sprung Memory Foam Mattress. When it’s produced as a King Size mattress, 1500 pocket springs are used. When it’s produced as a Single mattress, the proportionate number of pocket springs are used to produce a mattress of equal feel and firmness. It’s still listed as an Outlast Superior 1500 though.
Where To Find The Pocket Spring Count
To make things nice and confusing, not all mattresses say the pocket spring count in their name. However, it’s really easy to filter out the pocket spring designs on our website:
1. Filter Your Search
When you’re browsing our range of UK-made mattresses, you can use the ‘Number of Pocket Springs’ filter control in the left-hand column to narrow down your search to mattresses with 1000 or 1500 pocket springs.
2. Check out the Product Image
As you’re scrolling through our mattress range, take a moment to look at the profile image of that product. If it’s a pocket sprung memory foam mattress, the pocket spring count will be displayed on that image.
How Many Pocket Springs Do I Need?
The greater the number of springs, the more supportive the mattress will be. It’s also worth noting that mattresses with a higher pocket spring count will tend to feel firmer. So it depends what you’re looking for in a mattress.
Is 1000 Pocket Springs Enough?
We would recommend choosing a mattress with 1000 pocket springs or above. Anything under this number may not provide sufficient full-body support.
1000 or 2000 Pocket Sprung Mattress
A pocket spring count of 1500 and above is considered to be a highly supportive mattress. These mattresses are great for relieving back pain and will usually provide medium firm support.
2000 or 3000 Pocket Sprung Mattress
Mattresses with 2000 or 3000 springs are usually very supportive and can have a firmer feel.
However, the number of springs isn’t the only factor to consider when choosing a quality mattress...
How to Find The Best Pocket Spring Mattresses
The best pocket spring mattresses offer much more than just a high spring count. There are several factors to look out for when choosing the right bed for you;
- Quality of mattress materials
- Craftsmanship and construction
- Use of sleep technologies
All of our pocket sprung hybrid mattresses are crafted in our UK factory from quality materials adhering to strict safety standards. With over 50 years of working with foam behind us, we know a thing or two about memory foam technology!
The right mattress for you will also depend on your individual sleep needs, your budget and your comfort preferences.
For example, pocket spring mattresses without a memory foam comfort layer may feel too firm for side sleepers who require extra cushioning around pressure points.
When searching for a new mattress;
- Make sure the mattress manufacturer is reliable and uses quality materials
- Check pocket sprung mattress reviews to find out what customers REALLY think
- Spend as much as you can afford whilst staying within your means
