How To Care For a Memory Foam Mattress

How to Care for a Memory Foam Mattress | Do’s and Don’ts

Good quality memory foam mattresses are well known for their durability – and with hardly any effort on your part! Take a look at our simple tips on how to care for a memory foam mattress, and you’ll sleep like a dream for up to 15 years!

Memory Foam Mattress Do's and Don'ts

Making a little effort to care for your memory foam mattress will pay dividends when your bed continues to provide the perfect balance of comfort and support for years to come.

Here are some simple do’s and don’ts to keep your mattress looking and feeling fresh;

1. Do Rotate It Regularly

Our memory foam mattresses are designed to not be turned over – as is the case with many other layered foam mattresses. However, we do recommend that you rotate it head-to-foot every three months or so to help prevent depressions developing in areas of concentrated pressure.

2. Don’t Get it Wet

Do your best to avoid spilling liquids on the surface of the mattress, as fluids can interfere with the foam and increase how quickly it deteriorates. We recommend using a mattress protector to help protect against this, especially if you’re prone to spillages!

3. Do Use a Suitable Bed Base

Make sure that your bed base is firm, even and has no major gaps. If your base has slats, they should be 10 – 15cm wide and have gaps no more than 5cm. Larger gaps will contribute to the deterioration of the mattress over time due to uneven support. Find out which bed base is right for your mattress here.

4. Don’t Keep it Near Strong Heat Sources

Memory Foam is a heat-sensitive material – that’s why it reacts to your individual body shape so perfectly. So, it’s best to keep your memory foam mattresses away from strong heat emitters.

Similarly, electric blankets and hot water bottles should not be used with memory foam mattresses as the strong heat source will interfere with the foam’s performance, damage the structure of the foam, and ultimately shorten its lifespan.

5. Do Protect it With a Washable Mattress Cover

Most of our mattresses come with an easily removable, washable mattress cover to keep it fresh and protect against spills and stains. Wash at 40 to keep your mattress spick and span for longer.

6. Don’t Make Your Bed!

And finally…breaking all rules here but we advise not making your bed as soon as you get up. This way, you’ll allow your mattress and bedding to breathe and any moisture created in the night will be evaporated.

Memory Foam Mattress FAQs

With our many years in the memory foam business, we’ve come across all manner of questions from our customers. Let’s clear up a few common ones;

How Long Will a Memory Foam Mattress Last?

Providing you treat your mattress well, a quality memory foam mattress could last up to 15 years!

Memory foam is a durable material and the higher the density of the foam, the longer it will last. For this reason, it pays to spend a little extra to not have to replace your mattress in a couple of years.

How Often Should a Memory Foam Mattress be Turned?

Never! Our memory foam doesn’t need to be turned, which can be a tricky job if you have a heavy mattress. Instead, simply rotate your memory foam mattress from head to foot every three months or so.

How Do You Maintain A Memory Foam Mattress?

By following our memory foam mattress do’s and don’ts! Luckily, memory foam is one of the most low-maintenance types of mattresses out there, so it’s not difficult to keep it in tip top condition.

How do you Deep Clean a Memory Foam Mattress?

Spills and stains are a fact of life. If you ever need to deep clean your mattress, follow these steps;

  • For dust removal - strip the sheets and use the brush attachment to vacuum your mattress, ridding it of dead skin cells and dust mites.
  • For unpleasant odours - first vacuum the mattress before sprinkling baking soda onto the surface and leave for 24 hours. After this period, vacuum off the baking soda to reveal your fresh new mattress.
  • For stain removal - fill a spray bottle with a small amount of dishwashing liquid and water or white vinegar for an eco-friendly cleaning option. Spray the stained area and scrub the stain in a gentle circular motion with a clean sponge. After the mattress is spot cleaned, you can follow with baking soda to draw out stubborn stains.

Does a Memory Foam Mattress Need to Breathe?

Yes. Air circulation helps to prevent mould and keep you feeling cool all night long. Using a bed frame with open space underneath the mattress helps to keep air circulating.

How Do You Fix A Dip in a Memory Foam Mattress?

If your current memory foam mattress is made from low quality foam and you haven’t been rotating the mattress as often as recommended, you may find it starts to dip or sag over time.

Unfortunately, there isn’t much you can do once the mattress starts to dip, other than replacing your mattress or using a memory foam mattress topper for extra comfort. Looking after your mattress properly will help to avoid this situation all together!

How to Clean A Memory Foam Mattress Topper

Added a topper to the mix? We don’t blame you. An extra memory foam layer can provide the luxurious comfort and support you need for a great night’s sleep.

To clean your memory foam mattress topper, simply follow the same steps you would to clean a mattress mentioned above!
